Hanoi Fabrics

2012 - Traditional Vietnamese clothes (quilt) are hand-stitched and made completely from silk. Due to the luscious patterns that are usually made, the stitching is a time-consuming affair. A group of farmers near Saigon, are producing these plaids and pillow covers. For the Hanoi fabrics they combine the traditional silk with a warm wool. This results in exciting combinations of materials and colors. It also resulted in an additional function: it gave the products a warm soft as well as a fresh, smooth quality. For the stitching, simple and functional cross pattern were developed. Exactly enough to connect the various layers of textile.  But with far fewer stitchings that usual, keeping the products affordable. In this design, the stitching creates a subtle craft accent.
